Dedicated to Phil Ramone

Regarding the Sky Worlds recording, Phil had said, “Dr. Tisziji, I want to record you doing what you do.” It was a tremendous, unsolicited privilege and honor to have Phil overseeing a recording of my music, which he called pure avant-garde jazz, and that doesn’t mean he liked it! Sky Worlds was performed by the core players of the Divine Radiance album, which was produced by David Letterman’s musical director and my dear friend, Paul Shaffer. I had very little contact with Phil but when I did, it was intense, direct and a kind of self-respecting, seesaw play. He’d say yes, I’d say no; he’d say no, I’d say yes. In terms of our identities, we were complete opposites, yet very much alike. Phil would say, “You are the Hendrix-Coltrane of the guitar.”

At the Sky Worlds recording session, Phil almost made us play these tunes correctly! I like doing it loose, long, strong and deep. He had me change my sound from heavy crunch to very light crunch He adjusted my Mesa Boogie amp and was the only man to have put his hands on my knobs and get away with it!

If for no other reason, I have to love this great and brilliant man for having the heart and courage to record my music in all its raw, heart-blown madness, when he was a genius of the classical school of music, and I, an ecstatic genius of the pre-classical or primordial school of Heart-Fire Sound. I would playfully call him Phil-harmonic. Classical music gone mad is jazz which, gone mad, is avant-garde, which mastered and transcended, is Heart-Fire Sound. – Tisziji

“Though a lifelong atheist, one could say Tisziji’s music has become my religion. His sound, word and Spiritual counsel has been my salvation, raising me up from some heavy karmic self sufferation programs. I love all Tisziji’s records, but this new release, Sky Worlds recorded under the auspices of master producer Phil Ramone and featuring Ravi Coltrane, Bernie Senensky, Don Pate and the great Rashied Ali is my new favorite. This miraculous recording is so full of exuberance and joyous fully liberated creativity it seems almost super human (or perhaps what human’s true potential could be).  One reason this record is so special is the playing of Rashied Ali. This is Rashied at his very best and happiest. His playing is crisp, loose, free, swinging, delicate, immensely powerful and subtle all at once.  Ravi, Bernie, Don and Rashied have all created a life-long body of work at the highest level. Yet I doubt that their playing has ever been so untethered by the past and tradition as it is here  This is the effect of playing with Tisziji as i can attest from personal experience. The enCOURAGEment is to leave behind what one knows and to play what is not known and can’t be known with the self mind or intellect. This is where the real healing and true creativity takes place. Tisziji’s music is raw, primordial, uncontained and unrestrained, yet also divinely beautiful and heart centered. Phil Ramone (a classically trained violinist) known for producing artists such as Billy Joel, Paul Simon, Tony Bennett and so many others, was apparently quite disturbed by hearing Tisziji’s unschooled intensely powerful shamanistic playing and perplexed by Tisziji’s disinterest in music biz fame and fortune. Still he was able to appreciate the almost classically beautiful Tisziji melodies and realize on an intuitive level there is something profoundly deep, mysterious and true in this music even if it was beyond his understanding. Kudos and gratitude to Maestro Ramone for having the courage and openness to help this recording come to pass. This is probably the best recorded sound of any Tisziji recording.  Whether it was the room, the quality of the mics, the skill of the engineer (Elliot Scheiner) or all of the above, it is a joy to hear the music both so clear and warm sounding. For those of you who seek the Spiritual in music, who love the music of John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, McCoy Tyner, Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, John McLaughlin and others of that ilk, you owe it to yourself to checkout Sky Worlds and other music by Tisziji. It could change your life. It did mine. Love Always Hu” - Ra-Kalam Bob Moses
